Three fellowship programs are currently being offered at the Department Of Urology, Indiana University School of Medicine. They are Uro-oncology, Pediatric Urology, and Endourology and Laparoscopy.

The Uro-oncology Fellowship Program

The GU oncology fellowship was credentialled by the Society of Urologic Oncology in 2001. The uro-oncology fellowship is a two year program comprised of one year of basic science research in the urology laboratory under the guidance of Doctors Gardner and Kao, followed by a year of clinical fellowship. We offer an exceptional clinical experience in all aspects of urologic cancer care. Our clinical experience is unparalleled anywhere. The fellow is responsible for coordinating the multidisciplinary cancer conference, and is expected to pursue multiple clinical and basic science research projects. Basic science research is focused on genetic approaches to the treatment of urologic malignancies. Prospective fellows should apply to Dr. Michael Koch (317) 274-7338 or email at miokoch@iupui.edu for further information.

The Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program

The pediatric urology fellowship is an ACGME accredited fellowship. We accept one fellow every other year into this program. Fellows must have completed an accredited urology residency in the United States. Each fellow spends two years with us. The first year is spent in pediatric urology research under the direction of Doctors Meldrum and Kaefer in basic science research and under the direction of all the faculty members for clinical projects. During the fellowship, the fellow is expected to pursue multiple basic science and clinical research projects. Basic science research is focused on the molecular events that occur in response to neonatal urinary obstruction. During the second year, the fellow rotates on the clinical service. Our large clinical volume is exceptional and provides the fellow with ample training experience. We hold separate pediatric urology radiology conferences, clinical conferences, and research conferences. Our anticipation of our fellows is that they will continue on to secure academic appointments in pediatric urology and leadership positions in the specialty. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Rink's office at (317) 274-7472 no later than 18 months prior to the anticipated starting date.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship

Overview

The one year fellowship recognized by the Endourological Society involves comprehensive training in all aspects of minimally invasive urology. The focus of this training however will be advanced laparoscopy including robot assisted surgery. The fellowship will be at Indiana University Hospital and the Wishard Hospital in the Indiana University Medical Center. The Medical Center is located adjacent to Riley Hospital for Children, the Medical School and other schools of the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis campus. This allows easy access to all departments of the medical school and other facilities, to facilitate collaboration and research. The fellow will function as a junior attending urologist at the County (Wishard) Hospital one day each week, where he/she will supervise residents in the operating room as well as the urology clinics. Each week, the fellow is in the OR at the university, 2-3 days, and is involved with research during the remaining 1-2 days. The fellow’s annual salary and benefits are equivalent to that of a senior resident/fellow at IU.

Clinical

The variety of advanced laparoscopic surgery exposes the fellow to all aspects of the urologic laparoscopic surgery including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and robot assisted prostatectomy, pyeloplasty and sacrocolpopexy with the da Vinci surgical system, adrenalectomy, pediatric laparoscopy and other routine renal surgeries. The fellow will work predominately with Dr. Sundaram, but will be an integral part of the Urology Department, working with other faculty during laparoscopic and endourologic procedures. Dr. Koch performs 3-6 robot assisted radical prostatectomies per week and Dr. Gardner has a practice in advanced laparoscopic surgery. The fellow would therefore be exposed to different techniques during the fellowship. Almost all the fellow’s time is spent with surgical training, education and research. The University Hospital has two 4 arm daVinci Surgical Systems, and two laparoscopy OR suites with digital video recording facility. With only two residents for 7 adult faculty members at the University Hospital, there is adequate surgical volume for the residents and the fellow. The annual volume of minimally invasive surgeries is:

Laparoscopic and robot assisted surgery: 400 procedures

Percutaneous surgery: 40 procedures

Ureteroscopic procedures: 100 procedures.

Education

An advanced laparoscopic training facility is managed by the fellow, for training of medical students and residents. An annual laparoscopic course with live surgery is conducted in the summer. The fellow is a faculty at the course. Third and 4th year medical students are offered a month long elective in urologic laparoscopy. The fellow is closely involved with their education and clinical research. The fellow does not have outpatient clinic responsibilities at the University Hospital. The da Vinci surgical systems is used predominately by urologists. The department conducts one of the few physician lead 2 day training programs in the country for certification of urologists on the daVinci Surgical System.

Research

A fully equipped animal laboratory is available in the Indiana University Medical Center. The fellow can perform one animal research study during the fellowship. Several clinical studies are presently in progress. There are comprehensive laparoscopic data bases for prostatectomies, renal surgery and adrenalectomies. Dr. Gardner has a basic science lab investigating novel tumor specific gene therapy for urologic malignancy, with several funded projects. There are 3 PhDs in the urology research program. Fellows can work in the lab, depending upon their interests.

Application Process

Applicants must complete an accredited urology residency in the US before joining the fellowship. This fellowship participates in the Endourological Society fellowship match program. Details and application forms are available at http://www.endourology.org/fellowship/.
